The concept of data lineage focuses on the tracking of the data, by the source or origin, what happens to it, and where it moves over time. It may further include the history of processing of a data element, which may include point-to-point data flows and the data actions performed upon the data element. Within information security, data provenance is described as important in understanding the chain of custody as it provides a historical record of the data and its origins. Per NIST, the “history of processing of a data element, which may include point-to-point data flows and the data actions performed upon the data element.” Adapted from: NIST Glossary. 2020. https://csrc.nist.gov/glossary
